Review: The Kelly SHU Bass Drum Microphone Mounting System
As a drummer, I’m always looking for ways to get the best sound out of my kit while keeping setup simple and reliable. One piece of gear that’s become a permanent part of my Gretsch kit is the Kelly SHU bass drum microphone mounting system, and after using it for a while, I can confidently say it’s a game-changer.

I run an Audix D6 inside my kick drum with the Kelly SHU suspension mount. (I will review my Audix microphones soon) I use a double bass drum pedal and like to have some bounce off the drum head. The system holds the mic securely in place without needing a port hole in the front kick drum head. The bass drum is fully closed on both sides, which gives me the resonance and bass drum bounce I like while still capturing that punchy low-end tone the D6 is known for.

What I love about the Kelly SHU is how clean and consistent the setup is. Once installed, the mic stays exactly where it should be, (a couple zip ties on the mic for extra security) I have the mic cord routed through a small hole in the drum shell where I can plug in the XLR. No more stands shifting around during gigs, no more fighting for space on crowded stages. It also makes load-in and tear-down faster since the mic lives inside the drum.

Sound-wise, the results speak for themselves. The combination of the Kelly SHU mount and the Audix D6 delivers a powerful low end with plenty of attack. In fact, I’ve found that with such a solid low-end foundation, I now use hard bass drum beaters on my pedal to add a little extra smack and definition to that bottom-heavy tone. It’s the perfect blend of thump and punch, with enough clarity to cut through the mix without losing depth.
Engineers I’ve worked with also appreciate not having to fuss with mic placement every time. The Kelly SHU keeps everything locked in and consistent, and the sound quality is always there gig after gig.
Overall, the Kelly SHU bass drum microphone mount with the Audix D6 mic is one of those behind-the-scenes tools that makes life easier for drummers. If you want a consistent, professional bass drum sound without extra hassle, this system is absolutely worth it.
